June 3, 2006: Celebrate Trails Day
Berlin Land Trust will lead our 2nd annual National Trails Day hike - Saturday morning, June 3rd. Starts at 9:00AM at Timberlin Park. The main entrance to Timberlin Park is on Route 364, Southington Road (off of Route 71, the Chamberlain Highway). Access to the walking trail is at the lower parking lot. This will be a 3 - 4 mile hike of Short Mountain via the Amelia Green Trail. Nice views! Wear appropriate footwear and bring a beverage and snack. Heavy rain cancels. June 5, 2006: 18th Annual Meeting
Berlin Land Trust Annual Meeting & Open House
 - Monday evening, June 5. 
Starts at 6:30PM at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library in the Blanche Delaney Meeting Room.with an informal gathering of members, friends and residents with light refreshments. The meeting will begin at 7:15PM with a review of last year's accomplishments and plans for next year. The business meeting portion will conclude with the election of 2006-07 directors and officers. Members and the public are welcome at all BLT meetings.  Hope to see you there!

 Ragged Mountain self-guided hike

  • Starting point: West Lane parking area, Kensington, CT (see directions below)
  • Recommended trails & pace: See map below. Take Green-dot Trail northwest to Blue Trail (Metacomet Trail),  then turn south near junction with White-dot trail to hike along the Blue Trail (great ridge hike) southwest to Ragged Mountain Summit. Follow the Blue Trail to the Red-dot Trail, then hike the Red-dot back to the parking area. At about 2 miles an hour, with stops along the trail at points of interest and for lunch break, hike will take about 2.5- 3 hours.
  • Distance/conditions: 5 miles, fairly strenuous with some climbing.
  • What to wear/bring: Hiking boots or good walking shoes, warm layers of clothing (depending on weather conditions), lunch or snack, water bottle(s)

    Highlights: Enjoy fantastic open views to the west and south. Also observe the cliff area in Southington where BLT holds a conservation easement on 55 acres. The Metacomet Trail is part of the Metacomet-Monadnock-Mattabesett Trail: National Scenic Trail Study

    BLT property/easements along this hike:
  • Ragged Mountain easement (July 1999) – Southington
    Fifty-five acres in Southington, including the Ragged Mountain cliffs and abutting the Ragged Mountain Memorial Preserve, owned by the Ragged Mountain Foundation. The property was originally donated to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) by Stanley Hart in 1989. In 1998, TNC donated the conservation easement, which was placed on the Ragged Mountain Preserve, to the Berlin Land Trust. Concurrent with the easement agreement, TNC transferred the ownership of the property to the Ragged Mountain Foundation.
  • Ragged Mountain Parcel (December 2002) - Berlin About 1 acre of forested land near the top of Ragged Mountain in Berlin. Donated by Earl H. Wicklund.

    Driving directions: From Route 9, take exit to Route 71A (High Road) south onto Chamberlain Highway. About 1/4 mile past Roger's Market, turn right (westward) on West Lane. Follow West Lane about 1 mile to parking area at 90 degree left bend in road. Park on the right side of the road at trailhead.

     Board Meetings
    The Berlin Land Trust Board of Directors meets on the first Monday of the every month at 7:30 p.m. from September through June, (except Sept. when we meet the Monday after Labor Day) at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, 234 Kensington Road, Berlin, CT.

    Members and the general public are always welcome!
